Common Methodologies

CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a powerful tool for addressing negative self talk and intrusive thoughts. Many adults benefit from this approach because it provides actionable skills you can use to control unwelcome thoughts or behaviours.

DBT

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) focuses on teaching skills for mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with intense emotional responses or challenging relationships, and can help you build a life that feels more manageable and fulfilling.

Emotion-Based Therapy

This approach focuses on exploring and managing emotions, particularly those that feel overwhelming or difficult to cope with. It’s ideal for individuals who experience heightened emotional sensitivity or struggle with emotional regulation, and offers tools and techniques to help you recognize, accept, and process emotions in healthier ways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions we receive about individual counselling below.

How often can I or should I talk to my therapist?

Depending on the severity of your presenting symptoms, you and your therapist will decide together what the frequency of your sessions should be.

Generally speaking, clients start more frequently and gradually reduce the frequency of their sessions as they develop skills to manage their concerns.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologist, Therapist and Counsellor are used interchangeably to describe a licensed mental health professional.

However, most insurance companies cover Registered Psychologists and Registered Provisional Psychologists, both governed by the College of Alberta Psychologists.

How much does a counselling session cost?

Between $150 and $210, depending on the psychologist that you are working with.

Are counselling sessions covered by my benefits?

Most likely. Almost all insurance companies provide coverage for sessions conducted with both Registered Psychologists and Registered Provisional Psychologists. Your insurance policy could provide you between $300 and $10,000 in coverage for therapy per year.

Are there any subjects that I shouldn’t talk about with my therapist?

No. However, there are limits to confidentiality to be aware of when others or yourself are at immediate risk, which your therapist will discuss with you during your first session.

How long is each session?

Sessions are 60 minutes long, which is longer than the industry standard of 50 minutes. This is to ensure that you have sufficient time with your therapist and so that sessions do not feel rushed.

What should I bring to my sessions?

Just you. Some clients also find that bringing a journal to take down notes during sessions is helpful, but not required.
